There are 3 main types of construction dust;
• Silica dust: Silica is a natural mineral present in large amounts in things like sand, sandstone and granite and is commonly found in many construction materials; i.e. concrete and mortar. The silica is broken into very fine dust (also known as Respirable Crystalline Silica or RCS) during many common tasks such as cutting, drilling and grinding, and is often referred to as silica dust.
Caffeine is a mild stimulant present in coffee, tea and cola as well as in tablet form and in special ‘energy’ drinks. Caffeine can even be found in chocolate and some medicines.. It can improve reaction time and feelings of alertness for short periods.
The Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008 place an obligation on anyone who intends to carry out a construction project with estimated costs greater than £300,000 (excluding VAT) to prepare a SWMP conforming with the Regulations before construction work begins. However, as of the 1st December 2013 the Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008 are due to be repealed.
