Hospital Noise Evaluation

The Hospital is a new purpose built luxury boutique hospital in a prestigious area of London. The Hospital has styled interiors comparable to a boutique hotel. The hospital has 17 private rooms, 4 operating theatres and an ambulatory care unit in addition to kitchen and other ancillary areas.

Our consultants were initially appointed to undertake environmental noise monitoring at the site in order to establish existing background noise levels to assist the building services design in accordance with standard guidelines. As the project evolved, so too did the level of involvement and there were requirements for ad hoc consultancy advice to the architects, building services engineers and contractors during both the design and construction phases.

As well as input on the requirements for noise control from building services equipment, there was also involvement in the specification of the internal elements of the building, including partitioning, separating floors and reverberation control, to achieve the requirements of HTM-08-01: Acoustics; all within the constraints of an historic building with limited footprint and, at the same time, maintaining hygiene standards.

Involvement from the beginning of the project through to completion meant that there were challenges faced by working with both the design team and the construction team and making sure that the elements of acoustic design were maintained throughout.

The hospital was opened in Summer 2010 and was nominated for a prize at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2010 in the Patient Environment Class: Best Interior Design.
